The seven liberal arts of medieval universities, were divided into the four upper division and the three lower division. Arithmetic, music, geometry, and astronomy made up the four upper division. The Latin words "quadri" (four) and "via" (way) were combined to form the name of this division: QUADRIVIA.

Grammar, rhetoric, and logic made up the three lower division. The Latin words "tri" (three) and "via" (way) were combined to form the name of this division: TRIVIA.
